Recycle Right

How To Prepare Recyclables

Check the Weather: If high winds or rain are expected, keep your recyclables inside until the next pickup.

Remove All Packaging: Ensure that materials like Styrofoam, plastic, and bubble wrap are not mixed with your recyclables.

Cover Loose Paper: Use heavier items to keep paper from blowing away.

No Plastic Bags: Recyclables should be placed directly in your recycling bin—do not bag them.

Our Disposal Guide

What's Recyclable?

Remember, a recycling symbol on an item doesn’t necessarily mean we can recycle it at the curb, or that there is a recycling market. For example, no glass will be collected with the comingled recycling program.

Battery Disposal

Incorrect Battery Disposal Can Cause Fires

Batteries in common household items may seem harmless, but when disposed of incorrectly, they pose a significant fire risk.

Avoid placing them in your regular garbage or recycling containers due to their highly flammable nature.

  • Remove the Batteries

Before disposing of electronic devices, check for and remove any batteries if possible. If you can’t remove the batteries, bring the entire device to your drop-off location.
  • Store Batteries in a Safe Place

Place used batteries in a non-metallic container (such as plastic, cardboard, or glass) to prevent any sparks that could ignite a fire.
  • Find Your Local Drop Off

Locate a nearby electronic disposal site or find a designated drop-off point for safe battery disposal in your area.
Our Process of Recycling

What to Do on Recycling Day?

Elko Recycling service is performed on the same day as your regular Elko Residential Waste Collection service

Make Sure Everything Fits

All items must fit inside the 65-gallon cart provided by Elko Sanitation.

Place the Cart in the Curbside Street Gutter

Place the cart in the curbside street gutter by 5:00 am on recycling day.

Make sure the cart handles face your property with the lid opening toward the street.

Keep Cart 5 Feet Clear of All Obstructions

Place your cart at least 5 feet away from obstructions like mailboxes, vehicles, basketball hoops, and trees.

This helps to ensure our Elko Recycling Truck’s mechanical arm can pick up the cart.

Elko Recycling service is performed on the same day as your regular Elko Residential Waste Collection service - on a biweekly basis.
Residential Recycling Pick Up

Holiday Schedule for Residential Garbage and Recycling

• New Year’s Day
• Martin Luther Kin Day
• Presidents Day
• Memorial Day
